The troubles in the Middle East has made me realize that I don’t know enough about the history of the region. Sure I know a few things here and there, but I have huge holes in my knowledge and background of the different countries, peoples, and their religions. Somewhere I read a comment that blamed the western countries for most of the conflicts “due to the Sykes-Picot agreement” or arguments following the line of “This is the result of post-colonialism”. I found that to be an overly simplistic explanation, but I nevertheless need to look into it. I knew that the Sykes-Picot had something to do with WWI, so I have chosed to start there.
A friend of mine recommended a podcast called Blueprint for Armageddon, which is a part of the Hardcore History series by Dan Carlin. This is an excellent runthrough of the history of WWI. It is about 23 hours long and therefore a rather long one at that. Dan Carlin is a superb storyteller. He is absolutely mesmerizing to listen to. He delves into world politics, relationships between nations at the break out of the Great War, the different royal families, technlogical advances, the course of the war battle by battle, and last but certainly not least the experiences of the individual soldiers on the ground.
